Drawing Near to God Through Prayer

Prayer is such a commonly used word, people everywhere whether believers or not, say, “I am praying for you,” or “I will pray for them.” It almost goes as interchangeably as, “I hope you feel better,” or “I am here for you.” Praying to our Father in Heaven has a whole different meaning then what is portrayed through social media or even through colleagues and friends around you, it is a way to talk to God. It is a way for us to ask God for something, or a way for us to just talk to our King, our Ruler, our everything.

As a believer who has grown up in the church, prayer to me always seemed like a holy moment that had to be done in a certain way in order to be “accepted by God” or for Him to even listen and answer me. I always thought that you had to come before God, checking off all the “Christian boxes”, making sure that you are pleasing to Him. Throughout the journey of getting to know God better and getting deeper rooted with His character, I have come to realize that prayer is to come just as you are before the father, and talk to Him as if He were your best friend. In my life, prayer has become something I run to, whether I am driving to work, sitting to get my nails done or spending my first half hour of the day with my savior. It has transformed into a conversation that it is rooted in faith and understanding that whatever I ask for, whatever I need in my life at any given moment, His perfect will is going to be done in my life.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

As believers, PRAYER:

  1. Is Intimacy with God

Intimacy with God means that you learn more and more about Him, through his word daily. It also means that you spend time giving him thanks and praising Him for who He is and what He has done in your life as well as others around you. Just like having intimacy with your loved ones throughout your life, you know your best friend and family at a really deep level. Through Intimacy with God, you get to experience His peace and presence like never before. Each intimate relationship that we have, has a different build, but the common theme would be considered trust. The more we trust God, our Father, the deeper we are able to understand His characteristics, His grace that He lavishly pours onto us.

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”

2 Corinthians 1:20

2. Allows us to Relinquish Control

To relinquish control to the Lord means surrendering to His will. This does not come naturally to us at all, we want the control because when we feel out of control, this opens the doors to the devil’s constant lies over our identity. When we allow God to have control, we are communicating with Him on a daily basis about everything that we are thinking, everything we desire as well as lifting up others with the authority He has bestowed upon us. We no longer have to worry about what we are going to eat or wear, we no longer have to worry about how we are going to make it to the next day, we can just lay it at His feet. All of our sorrows, all of our doubts, all of our anxieties through prayer can be cast unto the Lord, He is there to lift those burdens and fill us with His comfort, peace and joy that surpasses all understanding. Through prayer, we are giving God our Yes to lean on Him only and lean on His perfect will for our lives.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

3. Helps us Align our Desires with Gods Will

We all have desires and see our lives unfolding in certain ways, whether it be to be married and have a family, own your own business or travel around the world. Desiring different things, having goals, dreams and aspiration are not a sin, they are not going against God, but it is important to bring those desires before God so that if it is His will, He will bless them with his favor. Through prayer, you are able to present our desires, goals and dreams to the Lord and when you see things unfolding, whether it is just the way that you thought or not the way you thought at all, remember that it is Gods will for your life. Through this process, we are saying that we abandon our own plans if it does not match up with the plans of the Lord, it is hard of course, but it is vital in order to live in our purpose.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

God knows our hearts, he sees what is in our minds, bodies and souls. Nothing goes unnoticed, and because we are new creations in Him, He washes every single piece of dirt away and purifies every fiber of our being. Prayer does not come natural for us, because in a way we are coming naked before the Father, with our sins, weaknesses and failures all exposed. Prayer and surrender to Him, means we are depending on someone whom we cannot even see, and alot of times our pride will get in the way because we think we know what is best. The truth is we need to be met by God’s grace because only through that perfect grace will we be able to release our self-reliance and humbly rely on Him.
