How to Put God First When You’re Struggling

What’s a good way to tell that you’re disconnected from God?

When you feel like an emotional mess. Every time you feel angry, sad, resentful, unworthy, depressed, you name it, you are being given a sure sign that you’re putting God last.

Let me ask you some very important questions. Are YOU putting God first in your life? Are you spending quality time with Him? Are you studying God’s Word? The benefits of putting God first in your life are too numerous to count for a single post, so I’ll share five to start:

1.   Peace
2.   Guidance
3.   Wisdom
4.   Provision
5.   Comfort

Since it’s almost the end of the year, I want to reflect on the questions I just asked you. I must admit I feel as if I’m failing miserably.

Now, this is not to guilt trip you and I. However, I’m personally making a commitment that I MUST do a better job of putting God first for the rest of 2020 and for the new year to come. What about you friend?

There are so many things that demand our attention and devotion: our jobs, our kids, our spouses, our friends, our hobbies—the demands and distractions of life. Now add some chaotic emotions such as feeling angry, sad, resentful, unworthy and depressed and I can bet, that just like me, you run to distractions, instead of going to God – but it doesn’t have to be that way friend. I believe that God is calling us to go deeper in our walk with Him. That our messy emotions are NOT reasons to run AWAY from God, but it’s an invitation to run TO God. He’s calling us deeper and closer. It’s up to us to respond to His call; to put our YES on the alter, fully surrendering every part of ourselves to Him.

What choice will you make friend?

Here’s 5 practical ways to put God first in your life when your struggling:

1. How Do We Put God First When We’re Afraid?
We put God first in our lives when we trust Him to take care of us (Joshua 1:9). Instead of panicking and withdrawing, we give Him all of our worries.

He wants us to face our trials and tribulations with bold confidence in Him (Ephesians 3:12).

2. How Do We Put God First When We’re Lonely?
We put God first in our lives when we seek Him because we know He cares – when we go to Him for comfort on a tough day.

God will give us strength when we wait upon Him (Isaiah 40:31).

He is the one we must depend on for hope and reassurance, and we find these things in His living word, the Bible.

3. How Do We Put God First When We’re Angry?
Anger is a sign that something is wrong in our lives and we need to do something differently.

We put God first when we seek to find His direction and ask Him to change our hearts.

4. How Do We Put God First When We’re Grieving?
We put our hope in God. Putting God first in our grief is allowing Him to be in control of our circumstances. God has a good plan for those who love Him. When there is hardship, we put our hope in Him.

We put God first by relying on His promise to never leave us nor forsake us.

5. How Do We Put God First When Others Reject Us?
We live our lives to please God, not man.Our approval comes from God, and He has already accepted us!

We put God first by accepting what His Son did on the cross for us. We have nothing to prove to others, and it’s alright if they don’t like what we stand for.

Putting God first is more about our responses to life’s struggles.

You see, putting God first is more about our responses to life’s struggles. God is the answer to everything that matters. Acts of discipline, like going to church or serving others, are only part of putting God first. We also have to set our minds on Him and allow Him to change our hearts so that we can live a life that pleases Him.
